Compton Options for Police, Fire and EMS Scanners.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) uses VHF low-band radio communications which can be monitored on any scanner. Cal Fire is high-band and also analog.
The best Los Angeles County police scanner is a digital scanner radio. The Los Angeles Police Department uses a digital radio system. The cities of Beverly Hills, Burbank, Culver City, Glendale, Montebello, Pasadena, San Fernando, San Marino and the Verdugo Fire Center all use the digital Interagency Communications Interoperability System (ICIS) for police and fire communications and a digital scanner is thus also required for these cities. Santa Monica uses digital encryption and cannot be monitored on any scanner. Most other cities in Los Angeles County use conventional analog police and fire radio systems which can be monitored on any scanner. You do need an 800 MHz (non-trunking/non-digital) scanner to monitor the Los Angeles Fire Department. Any scanner will allow you to monitor the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Los Angeles County Fire and the California Highway Patrol. A digital scanner is also capable of monitoring non-digital systems.
