The Commonwealth of Massachusetts operates a statewide Motorola trunking radio system for the
State Police and other state and county sheriff (jailer) agencies. A few town police departments, such as Rehoboth, operate on the State Police radio system as well. Currently the State Police operate non-digitally other than a few talkgroups, although this is expected to expand over time particularly in the western part of the state and on Cape Cod where a digital repeater was recently installed. At the time of this
writing it is not necessary to own a digital scanner to listen to the State Police in Massachusetts but it would not be unwise to purchase a digital scanner as it is expected that digital use on the system will grow over time. The State Police also continue to use their old low-band channels for tactical communications.
