Oxford Options for Police, Fire and EMS Scanners.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts operates a statewide Motorola trunking radio system for the State Police and other state and county sheriff (jailer) agencies. A few town police departments, such as Rehoboth, operate on the State Police radio system as well. Currently the State Police operate non-digitally other than a few talkgroups, although this is expected to expand over time particularly in the western part of the state and on Cape Cod where a digital repeater was recently installed. At the time of this writing it is not necessary to own a digital scanner to listen to the State Police in Massachusetts but it would not be unwise to purchase a digital scanner as it is expected that digital use on the system will grow over time. The State Police also continue to use their old low-band channels for tactical communications.
The best Worcester and Worcester County police scanner is a trunking radio scanner. The city of Worcester Police and Fire departments use an EDACS(tm) trunking radio system for their communications. Some small departments in the county rely on the State Police Motorola trunking system. All other departments use conventional communications and any police scanner including low-end models will work. Fitchburg and Leominster police and fire use basic radio systems that can be scanned by a conventional low-cost scanner for example.
