Salt Lake City Options for Police, Fire and EMS Scanners.
The Utah Highway Patrol uses a mix of trunking radio communications and VHF high-band analog conventional communications. Along the Wasatch Front Range most Utah Highway Patrol radio communications are on the UCAN Motorola trunking system (which is in the process of re-banding). This means that a newer trunking scanner is required to monitor this system. In the more rural areas of the state the Utah Highway Patrol uses conventional VHF radio which can be monitored on any basic scanner. A trunking scanner can also monitor conventional so if you wish to monitor the entire state of Utah then a trunking scanner is the best choice.
Salt Lake County, Utah and many cities and towns within the county uses the statewide, UCAN , analog trunking system along with conventional analog police and fire radio communications systems. A trunking police scanner will work best in Salt Lake County, including all trunking models. The best Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City, Utah police and fire scanner is a trunking model.
Note: The rebanding of the statewide UCAN system has taken place. A firmware update is needed for new scanners or a replcement of the entire scanner for older trunking scanner models, will be needed, if the scanner does not support rebanding.
